This year GATE has launched two new papers. One of them is Environmental Science and Engineering (ES).
It opens up opportunities into Environmental Science studies. You will not have to study irrelevant subjects like structures to write this paper. It is purely on environmental-related studies. You can choose this as your primary paper in GATE if it interests you.
This year GATE has announced that third years can attempt GATE and also that a student can appear for two papers.
Students who are writing Civil Engineering as a primary paper can attempt Environmental Science as a second paper.
Students who are writing Agricultural Engineering as primary paper can attempt Environmental Science as a second paper.

Section 2: Environmental Chemistry
Section 3: Environmental Microbiology
Section 4: Water Resources and Environmental Hydraulics
Section 5: Water & Wastewater Treatment and Management
Section 6: Air and Noise Pollution
Section 7: Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
Section 8: Global and Regional Environmental Issues
Section 9: Environmental Management and Sustainable Development

GATE has also put up sample question paper for GATE 2021 ES paper. There are questions which can be answered easily by Civil Engineering students like Q17, Q18 and Q19 below.
But there are questions which require detailed reading on environmental science like the ones below.
