GATE Civil Engineering Mark Distribution with Subject-Wise Weightage

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Subject-wise weightage for a subject gives an idea about the relative importance of topics within the subject and helps in planning the preparation. Subject-wise weightage is as important as knowing the syllabus. In this blog, subject-wise weightage for GATE civil engineering is discussed in detail.

GATE Civil Engineering Subject-Wise Weightage

This section covers the details about which subjects are given weightage in GATE civil engineering exams based on several years of data.

1. Aptitude

Aptitude in general always covers about 15% of weightage in the GATE exam. Basic knowledge in aptitude will be enough to score easily in this part.

2. Engineering Mathematics

Engineering mathematics covers about 13% of weightage. Detailed knowledge of important topics like calculus and numerical methods is enough to score good marks in this part.

3. Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering is the most important subject in the GATE civil engineering exam. It covers about 13% of weightage each year. Detailed knowledge of all the topics in the subject is required to score well in this subject.

4. Transportation and Highway Engineering

The second most important subject is transportation and highway engineering. It covers about 10% of weightage each year. Covering important topics like geometrical design of highways, stopping sight distance, overtaking sight distance, transition curves etc. in highway engineering and conflict points, amber light time etc. in transportation engineering is enough to score good marks in this part.

5. Environmental Engineering

Next is the environmental engineering subject as it occupies about 10% of weightage each year. Covering all the topics in this subject is necessary as the questions from this subject are highly unpredictable.

6. Fluid Mechanics

Fluid mechanics covers about 8% of weightage each year. Clarity on basic concepts is enough to score marks in this subject.

Subjects like surveying, the strength of materials, and structural analysis occupy only about 5% of weightage. Therefore, an overview of the basic concepts in this subject is enough to score in this part.

Design of reinforced concrete structures, design of steel structures, engineering mechanics and hydrology occupy only 3% of the weightage. Brief knowledge of important topics in these subjects is enough to score in this part.

GATE Civil Engineering Marks Distribution

This section covers the details about GATE civil engineering mark distribution based on the previous year i.e., the 2022 exam.

GATE 2022 Civil Engineering Forenoon Session

Environmental engineering carried the most weightage in the forenoon session of the GATE 2022 exam after general aptitude and engineering mathematics. Around 12% of the total questions were asked from environmental engineering and geotechnical

The least number of the question was asked from Steel Structures, Surveying and Hydrology Irrigation.

The below pie-chart gives the detailed weightage of each subject in the forenoon session.
