GATE 2022 Civil Engineering Paper Analysis | Key Highlights and Subjectwise Weightage

APSEd brings you a special analysis of GATE 2022 Civil Engineering including subjectwise weightage for both forenoon and afternoon session conducted on 12th Feb by IIT Kharagpur. A total of 1,00,000+ aspirants were expected to appear in the paper.

GATE CE 2022 Paper Analysis

Moderate Level Paper: There were a few tough questions, but apart from those 2-3 tough ones, the paper was in line with the expectation. No surprises!

Overall Analysis

  • Both the forenoon and afternoon papers were more of concepts. The numerical part was more but those were completely conceptual.

  • We stressed more on MSQs in our FLTs with 6Qs in each FLT, as this was a newly added question type from GATE 2021. This time, close to 7 MSQs were asked in both papers compared to the 1 question asked in 2021

  • Construction technology and management had 4-5 questions similar to last time, so this subject is gaining some importance unlike pre-2021 papers

  • There were 23 NATs this times compared to the 27 NATs in 2021.

  • Students who additionally got the lengthy questions, and MSQs correct will have a high chance for top rank, as other subjects' questions can be solved by anyone.

Check the below graph for the distribution of questions across MCQs, MSQs, and NATs.

Highlights of GATE 2022 CE Sessions

The difficulty level of both the papers was more or less the same as last year paper, even the number of MSQs or the weightage of subjects remained more or less across both papers.

Overall if we see, the significant difference between 2021 and 2022 is the number of MSQs, and MSQs are always tricky which can pull down the average and top marks a bit. There were some easier questions in 2022, and tough ones as well. We can expect in line with 2021 with some minor changes of 1-3 marks.

Expected cut-off this time will be 27-29.

Subject-wise Weightage GATE 2022 CE

I will not write more about this. APSEd full-length test pattern was very close to the GATE 2022 pattern. Environmental carried the most weightage in paper 1 and Geotech carried the most weightage in paper 2 out of the CE subjects. Aptitude has the usual 15 marks, and engineering maths 12-13 marks.

Subject wise questions in GATE 2021

Forenoon Session GATE CE - Subject Weightage Percentage

As discussed, Environmental carried the most weightage in paper 1 after general aptitude and engineering mathematics. Around 12% of the total questions were asked from environmental engineering and geotechnical

The least number of the question was asked from Steel Structures, Surveying and Hydrology Irrigation.

The below pie-chart gives the detailed weightage of each subject in paper 1.

GATE CE Forenoon Paper Subject-wise weightage

Afternoon Session GATE CE - Subject Weightage Percentage

As discussed, Geotechnical carried the most weightage in paper 2 after general aptitude and engineering mathematics. Around 14% of the total questions were asked from Geotechnical engineering.

The least number of the question was asked from Steel Structures, Surveying and Fluid Mechanics.

The below pie-chart gives the detailed weightage of each subject in the paper 2.

GATE 2022 Civil Questions

Some of the questions that were asked in GATE 2022 Civil are

  • The bearing of a survey line is N31°17’W. Find its azimuth from the north.

  • The hoop stress of a thin cylindrical shell is 30N/mm2. Find the max shear stress.

  • Cycle time = 100 sec, Red time, Amber time per phase is 50 and 4 seconds respectively. Clearance loss = 2 sec. Find the effective green time.

  • The vehicle count obtained every 10 minutes interval traffic volume in peak hour is given (table given). Find the peak hour factor (PHF) for 10 min intervals.

  • In the context of the elastic theory of reinforced concrete, the modular ratio is defined as the ratio of

  • Length of runway at sea level is 1,500m. What will be the length of runway at place 300m above mean sea level

  • For a traffic stream, V is the space mean speed, k is the density, q is the flow, Vf is free-flow speed and kj is the jam density. Speed decreases linearly with the flow, then which is correct?

  • 100mg of HNO3 is added to water bringing the final volume to 1lit. Atomic weights of H,N and O are 1,14 and 16 g/mol. The final pH is
