GATE Geomatics Exam Pattern
The GATE GE paper has a unique structure compared to most other GATE papers. It is split into two parts, and Part B requires you to choose one of two specialisation sections.

Component | Marks | Details |
General Aptitude | 15 | Common for all GATE papers |
Part A — Engineering Mathematics & Basic Geomatics | 55 | Compulsory for all |
Part B — Choose ONE section | 30 | Either B1 (Surveying & Mapping) or B2 (Image Processing & Analysis) |
Total | 100 | 65 questions |
Part B — Choose One
Part B1: Surveying and Mapping — Maps, Land Surveying, Aerial Photogrammetry
Part B2: Image Processing and Analysis — Data Quantization, Digital Image Processing, Radiometric & Geometric Corrections, Image Enhancement, Segmentation & Classification
You must decide your Part B section before the exam based on your background and strengths. Civil Engineering students typically find Part B1 more familiar. Students from CS/IT or image processing backgrounds often find Part B2 stronger.

The syllabus below is reproduced exactly from the official GATE 2026 GE Syllabus published by IIT Guwahati. The GE syllabus has been consistent since GATE 2021 — use this as your reference until the official GATE 2027 syllabus is released.
Topic-Wise Weightage
Based on the GE paper structure, marks are distributed as follows:
Component | Marks | Note |
General Aptitude | 15 | Fixed — common to all papers |
Engineering Mathematics (Part A) | ~13 | Included within Part A's 55 marks |
Remote Sensing (Part A) | High | Consistently high-weightage topic in Part A |
GNSS (Part A) | Moderate | |
GIS (Part A) | Moderate to High | |
Part B1 or B2 | 30 | Based on your chosen section |
Key strategic point: Part A alone carries 55 marks. Remote Sensing, GNSS, and GIS within Part A are the core of the paper — these need the deepest preparation. Engineering Mathematics in GE is different from other papers (error theory, least squares, regression) rather than standard calculus and differential equations.
Past Year Question Papers — GATE GE
Year | Question Paper | Answer Key |
2025 | ||
2024 | ||
2023 | ||
2022 | ||
2021 |
GE was introduced in GATE 2021 — so you have 5 years of papers. Given the smaller question pool compared to older papers, you should solve all 5 multiple times.
Two-Paper Combinations with GE
When GE is your primary paper, you can attempt the following as a second paper:
Primary Paper | Allowed Second Papers |
Geomatics Engineering (GE) | AR, CE, CS, ES, GG |
Always verify the exact allowed combinations from the official GATE 2027 notification — the list can change year to year.
Syllabus Overlap: GE with AR, CE, CS, ES, GG
GE + CE (Civil Engineering) — Strongest overlap
Part B1 (Surveying and Mapping) maps almost directly onto CE's Surveying subject — levelling, traversing, triangulation, Total Station, coordinate systems, and photogrammetry are all covered in CE. Engineering Mathematics in GE (error theory, least squares) also appears in CE's surveying component. GIS and Remote Sensing in Part A have no equivalent in CE and need fresh preparation.
GE + GG (Geology and Geophysics) — Significant overlap
Remote sensing and GIS are foundational tools in Geology and Geophysics — GG students use satellite data, DEM analysis, and spatial data regularly. This makes the Part A Remote Sensing and GIS sections considerably easier for a GG student. Engineering Mathematics in GE has partial overlap with GG's data analysis methods.
GE + CS (Computer Science and IT) — Moderate overlap
GIS data models, algorithms, and DBMS (Part A) share conceptual ground with CS's data structures and database topics. Part B2 (Image Processing) has overlap with CS signal processing and linear algebra concepts. However, the domain-specific applications (satellite imagery, radiometric correction, NDVI) are new territory for CS students.
GE + ES (Environmental Science and Engineering) — Limited overlap
Remote sensing and GIS are used in environmental monitoring, and ES Section 4 (Water Resources) involves some spatial data concepts. But the overlap is narrow. A GE student attempting ES essentially prepares two largely independent syllabi. This combination can make sense for students with a genuine interest in environmental geomatics.
GE + AR (Architecture and Planning) — Narrow overlap
GIS and spatial mapping have application in urban planning and architecture, giving AR students some contextual familiarity with Part A GIS topics. Land surveying in Part B1 has some relevance to site planning. Beyond this the overlap is limited.
Career Opportunities After GATE GE
1. M.Tech / M.S. Admissions
A valid GATE GE score qualifies you for M.Tech admissions in Geomatics Engineering, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, and related disciplines. GATE score remains valid for 3 years.
Institutes offering M.Tech programmes through GATE GE scores include:
IIRS, Dehradun (Indian Institute of Remote Sensing)
IITs — IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee
IIST, Trivandrum

Admission cutoffs and programme availability vary each year. Check CCMT and individual institute portals for current information.
2. PSU and Government Sector
GATE GE is a relatively new paper (introduced in 2021) and PSU participation continues to evolve. Watch out for organisations like ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) — scientist and engineer positions, particularly at Space Applications Centre (SAC) and IIRS, DRDO, Department of Space and Department of Science and Technology, Survey of India and related mapping organisations
Keep in mind: PSU recruitment through GATE varies year on year — which organisations participate, which papers they accept, eligibility criteria, and cut-offs all change. Always track the latest recruitment notifications directly from the organisation.
3. Private Sector and Research
Geomatics is one of the few engineering fields with strong and growing private sector demand, both in India and internationally. Companies actively hiring geomatics professionals include ESRI India, ERDAS India, RMSI, Rolta India, Tech Mahindra, Satsure, and Aarav Unmanned Systems, among many others.
Research opportunities exist at IITs, IISc, CSIR laboratories, and national institutes working on satellite data, climate monitoring, and urban informatics. For research roles, your academic record and relevant project experience matter alongside your GATE score gets you to the shortlist.
The geomatics field is growing with the expansion of drone mapping, satellite constellations, precision agriculture, smart cities, and disaster management — all of which run on geospatial data.
