GATE 2022 Geomatics Engineering - Syllabus and Sample Paper

Updated: Aug 31, 2021

Being a new paper, IIT Kharagpur has just released the syllabus & model question paper of GATE Geomatics. The GATE GE has a very similar syllabus to GATE CE. Here is the syllabus of GATE Geomatics. Geomatics Engineering (GATE GE) is one of the two newly added papers in GATE 2022. Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is the other one.

GATE Geomatics(GATE GE) syllabus matches very closely with the GATE CE Syllabus. So it can also be taken as an alternate paper with GATE CE.

Syllabus of GATE GE

Apart from the General Aptitude (GA) section that carries 15 marks, the question paper consists of two parts: Part A (55marks) and Part B (30 marks). Part A is compulsory for all the candidates.

Part B contains two sections: Section I and Section II. Candidates will have to attempt questions in Part A and questions in either Section I or Section II of Part B. The choice of Section I OR Section II of Part B can be made during the examination.

Part A consists of 36 questions carrying a total of 55 marks: 17 questions carrying 1-mark each (subtotal 17 marks) and 19 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 38 marks). Some are MCQ type questions, while the remaining may be MSQ and/or NAT questions.

Either section of Part B (Section I or Section II) consists of 19 questions carrying a total of 30 marks: 8 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 8 marks) and 11 questions carrying 2-marks each (subtotal 22 marks). Some are MCQ type questions, while the remaining may be MSQ and/or NAT questions.

  • Part A (Common for all): Engineering Mathematics, Remote Sensing, GNSS, GIS

  • Part B- Section I (Optional): Maps, Land Surveying, Aerial Photogrammetry

  • Part B- Section II (Optional): Data Quantization and Processing, Digital Image Processing, Radiometric and Geometric Corrections, Image Enhancement, Image Transformation, Image Segmentation and Classification

For the Full Syllabus refer to the below-attached file. General Aptitude and Part A of the syllabus is mandatory for all. With these two, either section I or Section II of part B needs to be attempted.

Who can write GATE GE as the second paper?

Unlike GATE 2021, GATE 2022 has a great number of paper combinations. Earlier in GATE 2021, there were not many paper combinations, for which candidates had to appear only for one paper. But, this time, you will have more options to choose your papers.

Candidates opting to appear in TWO subject papers must have a primary choice of paper as their default choice. The second choice of paper has to be chosen from the allowed combinations given here.

  • Keeping GE as your primary paper, you can attempt for four papers- GATE Civil Engineering (CE), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Environmental Science & Engineering (ES) and Mining Engineering (MN).

  • If you want to attempt GE as your secondary paper, the primary papers can be- Agricultural Engineering (AG), Civil Engineering (CE), Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC), Environmental Science & Engineering (ES), Geology and Geophysics (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mining Engineering (MN) and Physics (PH).

Sample Questions

GATE has also put up a sample question paper for the GATE 2022 GE paper. There are questions that can be answered easily by Civil Engineering students like Q2, Q28 and Q30, Q35. Most of the Part B - Section I questions can be answered by civil engineering students,

But there are questions that require detailed reading on Geomatics like the ones below.
